The common cause of low back pain is the stress on the spine. Spinal cord contains the nerves that carry messages between your brain and body, through the neck and back. If the spine becomes over-strained or compressed, the nerve roots also become irritated causing back pain. Overweight often stresses the low back. Other reasons for low back pain are sitting and standing for a long time at one place, skeletal irregularities, sudden twisting of muscles, lack of regular exercises and poor physical condition, poor sleeping position, etc.

Exercise is the most effective back pain treatment. Persons with skeletal problems should maintain and improve the strength of the muscles. Mild exercises help the muscles, to keep moving. Stretching, swimming, and walking are some of the healthy- exercises. It will speed up the recovery of back pain. Movement therapy develops proper posture, and balances muscle. Yoga is another treatment to get rid of back pain. You may experience a slight discomfort at the beginning of these exercises. But as the muscles become stronger, it will disappear. If your back pain is severe, you should stop exercising and contact a doctor, before taking drugs for pain relief.

To prevent back pain, you should maintain a healthy weight, to ease burden on your spine. When carrying a heavy load, you should keep the heaviest item on the center of the back to balance the sides. You have to keep the object close to you, when you want to lift a heavy object, and lift it giving stress to your legs, instead of back muscles. To ease strain on your back and encourage a good posture you should set up your chair, table, and computer properly. When you sleep, you have to use a pillow which will level your head and spine. Last of all, nicotine in cigarette degenerates bones, so you have to quit smoking.
