Allergy is a disorder of the immune system often also referred to as atopy. Allergic reactions occur to normally harmless environmental substances known as allergens; these reactions are acquired, predictable, and rapid. Strictly, allergy is one of four forms of hypersensitivity and is called type I (or immediate) hypersensitivity. It is characterized by excessive activation of certain white blood cells called mast cells and basophils by a type of antibody known as IgE, resulting in an extreme inflammatory response. Common allergic reactions include eczema, hives, hay fever, asthma, food allergies, and reactions to the venom of stinging insects such as wasps and bees.
There are many things that worsen allergic symptoms. They are: Pollen from trees, grass and weeds. Allergies that occur in the spring (late April and May) are often due to tree pollen. Allergies that occur in the summer (late May to mid-July) are often due to grass and weed pollen. Allergies that occur in the fall (late August to the first frost) are often due to ragweed. Mold is common where water tends to collect, such as shower curtains, window moldings and damp basements. Many allergens, including dust mites, are in dust.
Since allergies make people feel so miserable, it’s only natural that their mood and energy levels would change. Allergies can affect your mood in a number of ways. With all the itchy, watery eyes, wiping and blowing your nose, and sneezing, who can feel happy? Your allergies also can affect your energy level in a negative way. While your immune system is constantly battling all the things that you are allergic to, you are bound to notice a drop in the amount of energy you have. As a form of protection, your immune system releases all kinds of hormones and defense mechanisms to protect your body.
