Learning How To Deal With Allergies

An allergy is a very common occurrence that affects both adults and children in the US. It is a reaction that occurs when the body’s immune system acts inappropriately to any foreign substance [read allergen]. There are a number of symptoms like watery eyes, sneezing, itching, redness and asthma symptoms like wheezing and coughing that are experienced during this reaction.

There are different ways to deal with this problem. The body’s immune system can be shut so that it does not react with the allergen. This is achieved through anti histamine drugs which stop the effect of histamines on the body. The other way can be to try and avoid exposure to allergens. This is the safest and the healthiest way which can be used over a long term with no side effects. Some of these methods are discussed below -
• Vacuum regularly. Vacuuming should be done to keep your surroundings free of bacteria, pollen, mold, and dust.
• Try and avoid leaving clothes used outdoors in the bedroom overnight. These clothes bear dust and other airborne particles which can cause allergy.
• Humidity should be controlled as mold and bacteria reside in moist areas. Use exhaust fans in the restrooms to keep free of allergy causing agents.
• Keep the bedding, sheets and pillows free off dust and bacteria by dusting them regularly.
• Shower before you hit the bed at night to wash any dust off your skin and hair.
• Dust mites can cause allergy which can get into the bed and the pillows. Use a latex cover to prevent their growth.
• If there is a nose block, use saline solution to wash out the allergens. This can also prevent sinus infection.
• Plug-in air fresheners are a great source of allergic reactions. Removal of these items can drastically reduce the risk.
• Common food items like cheese, dairy products, wheat products or other medications can also cause allergy.
• Pollen allergies can be reduced by closing the doors and windows to prevent them from entering the house. Sun glass protection or ear plugs can be used to avoid pollen allergy.
• Those allergic to animals should avoid exposure to them.
• Choose doormats of synthetic material to avoid the breeding of mites, mold and fungus.
• Wipe off the dead insects from the porch lights as they can be a source of allergens if they decompose.
• Encourage guests to remove shoes before entering the house.
• Keep the fridge clean. Use a bleach solution with salt to reduce the possible growth of bacteria and mold.
• Clean the gutters regularly to avoid water logging.
• Avoid foods that contain monosodium benzoate as it can trigger allergy like symptoms such as sneezing, itching, runny nose etc. This preservative is commonly found in pickles, olives , juices and salad dressings.

Allergies Can Be Also Be Dealt With By The Intake Of Vitamins

• Vitamin C - Helps in reduced production of histamine and thus helps to prevent allergic reactions. A kiwi fruit every morning is a good source of vitamin C.
• Selenium -
Stimulates immune function and protects the cell membranes.
• Magnesium -
It is an anti stress mineral that can also reduce the broncho constriction in asthma patients.
• Calcium-
Regulates acidic/alkaline balance and thus reduces histamine production.
• Vitamin B15 -
Increases endurance and reduces muscle fatigue
• Selenium -
Stimulates immune function and increases function of vitamin C in the body. Also protects the cell membranes.
