Tuesday, May 12th, 2009 by admin

We observe that some people have abnormal reactions to normal and harmless situation and substances. This disorder is known as an allergy and the reaction is called an allergic reaction. The allergic reaction is caused by agents called as allergens which affect us during swallowing, inhaling or just touching. The allergens that usually cause the most problems are common house dust mites, pollen dust from plants, molds, animal fur, certain food items, insect bites, some medicines and climatic conditions. Some of the common symptoms of allergy are severe sneezing or coughing, watery eyes and nose, skin rashes and itching. Some people experience an allergic reaction after eating an ordinary thing as a chocolate and think they have become allergic to chocolate. An allergy to chocolate is very rare.

The fact is the reaction has been caused by an ingredient in the chocolate. It could be a case of allergies to cocoa butter which is used to make chocolates. The reactions can be found out by abstaining to eat the item for a period of time and then check if the reaction occurs when you re start eating the same. If allergies to cocoa butter persists, the solution is to eat only pure chocolates or avoid eating chocolates altogether.

Allergies to foods are not very common in children and very few children are affected. In most of the cases children tend to overcome this problem as they grow up and in most of the cases children food allergies gets cured on its own. It is better to avoid the food which causes the reaction in the child to avoid complications. Other common food allergies are caused by cow’s milk, products made from milk, eggs, wheat, Soya, Peanuts, corn and other food preservatives. The best way to treat and prevent the allergy is to note the product causing the reaction avoid eating the same.

8 killed by Gunman at North Carolina Nursing Home

Monday, March 30th, 2009 by justinsmith

March 29, 2009: A gunman killed seven aged patients and a nurse and injured several other people, including a police officer in an open fire on Sunday at a nursing home in Carthage, N.C., as reported by the authorities. Investigators in Carthage, N.C., discovered a weapon at the scene of incidence. The police have detained the gunman in custody.

The shooting began at around 10 a.m. at Pinelake Health and Rehab. It is a one-story building made in brick with white rocking chairs in front.

The Associated Press identified the patients as Louise Decker, 98; John Goldston, 78; Lillian Dunn, 89; Tessie Garner, 88;  Bessie Hendrick, 78; Margaret Johnson, 89; and Jessie Musser, 88. They were all American residents. The nurse has been identified as Jerry Avant Jr., 39.

The sister of Mr. Avant, Frances Green, said the authorities were of the opinion that her brother was shot when he was trying to prevent the gunman.

Ms. Green said, “He just lay down his life to protect the residents and employees there,” “Unfortunately he lost his life. But he was a hero.”

The gunman has been identified as Robert Stewart, aged 45. He was wounded and held in custody at the scene of incidence, as reported by Maureen Krueger, the Moore County district attorney. The officials released details about the attack, including the motive Mr. Stewart, himself a resident of the county, might have had behind the act.

The Associated Press reported that Stewart’s ex-wife said he had been meeting family members recently, telling them that he had cancer and was preparing to “go away”, while the authorities denied to remark on a likely intention.

State Senator Harris Blake of Moore County addressed the nursing home as a pillar of the community.

Mr. Blake said he predicted that almost everybody in that area knew someone who knew someone at that center. He added that they hear about tragedies like that all over the country and call it bad, and until it hits your own home, you don’t get a complete picture.
