Online University Rankings: Useful Aide In Decision Making

Online university rankings are a great help to all those who are looking for admissions into an academic program. In an age when the online universities are on a rise, one is faced with a wide range of choices, often leaving them confused. You can never be confident whether your selection of the university is the best or not.

Selecting An Online University Is Not Easy

In case of picking out any other things in life, say vegetables or clothes, choosing may be relatively easy. You can take a look at the different product options available and decide on the basis of some visible parameters, such as the color, freshness (in case of vegetables), price and the likes.

But selecting a university is not like buying a vegetable. Unlike vegetables, the university determines your career and your future. If you go wrong, there may be very little that you can actually do to change it. Some broad parameters that you can normally base your decision are say, the total cost, language of instruction, program elements and so on. But there is so much to a university that is qualitative in nature and therefore difficult to assess. This is where online university rankings help us in our decision making.

Continuing with the previous example, suppose you were to expand your parameters and include things such as the use of pesticides in producing vegetables or the labor conditions under which the clothing was produced, these you can not know by just looking at the final product. In such cases, external agencies can help with your decision. There may be a certification agency that labels the product as organic or another labeling system to say that the clothing was not produced under sweatshop conditions. Based on these certifications, we can then make an informed choice. The same is true in the case of online universities.

Comparison Is Not Easy

Comparison between various universities is rather difficult to make. The vast variety in institutional goals and size makes it quite an uphill task to be taken up on your own. The task of online university rankings is made easy by some reputed bodies that for years have been into grading colleges and universities and providing useful information to prospective students. This assessment is based on the information collected from each institution as well as on the opinions collected from those who are not a part of the school.

Some of the most important factors in the rankings are:
• What does the peer, namely the deans, presidents and others, think about the reputation of the institution?
• What is the rate of retention in the university?
• What have been the criteria for student selection to the program? This reflects the quality of students that the institution is attracting.
• What is the average number of student per class, faculty wages, faculty qualification level, and number of full-time faculty?
• What is the per student investment by the institution?
• What has been the performance rate over the years?
• What are the programs on offer by the university?

In addition to online university ranking, there are also rankings of specific academic programs, departments, and schools within each university. There, however, is no uniformity in ranking by the different bodies. You may come across various rankings for online universities. This is primarily due to the difference in the methodology adopted by these bodies. These ranking can also vary significantly from country to country.

But irrespective of this fact, online university rankings can be very useful in guiding your decision making process, especially when coupled with an individual’s specific needs.
