Things That Worsen Allergy Symptoms

An allergy is caused due to the body’s atypical response to a foreign substance. Some of the allergic symptoms include itching, runny nose, watery eyes, red eyes and respiratory disorders like asthma and wheezing.There are many things that can worsen these allergic symptoms. Some of them are discussed below -

Air pollution

Hot sunny days are not the best time of the year for allergy sufferers as higher temperatures can make their symptoms worse. Their allergy may also worsen due to increase in pollen count. It is also said that high ozone levels worsen the symptoms like increased coughing, tightening of the chest muscles and fatigue. There are some tips to minimize exposure to allergic substances-

• Try and avoid morning walks if you are allergic to pollen as the pollen count is the highest in the morning
• Read the weather forecast regularly to avoid hot temperature
• Ozone levels are high in the morning and low during sunrise. Plan your activities around early morning hours
• Use an air conditioner to keep your place cool, dry and free from dust and mold

Tobacco Smoke

Tobacco smoke can worsen an allergy and hence should not be let inside the home. The allergy sufferer should also not go near an active smoker.

Traffic Pollution

Traffic pollution and diesel particles have a large effect on the respiratory health as large amount of pollution emanates from motor vehicles. This pollution can cause difficulty in breathing, persistent cough and wheezing.

Wood Smoke

Wood smoke is also known to aggravate allergic symptoms. It is important to avoid wood stoves and fireplaces to prevent worsening of the symptoms.

Pets

Many pets like dogs, cats, rabbits are known to cause allergies. It is important to keep the pets away if the symptoms aggravate. A regular bath to pets can cut down the dander and their saliva which are potent allergens.

Strong Odors And Fumes

Perfumes, deodorants, cleaning agents, powder, and paint are a few allergens that should be avoided. These contain many chemicals which when used can cause allergic reactions.

Mold

If the humidity is high, the growth of mold will be a problem in the bathroom, kitchen and other wet areas. It is important to have good air circulation in these areas. The use of a dehumidifier can be one solution. Molds can also be formed on pillows which should be washed weekly to avoid further damage to the allergy.

Dust Mites

These are tiny spiders which can be seen in house dust. They are major triggers for people with allergies and asthma. Some ways to avoid dust mites and prevent symptoms from worsening are -

• Cover pillows and mattresses with allergen permeable cover
• Wash bedding and sheets every week
• Clean the surface dust regularly with a damp cloth
• Avoid sleeping on upholstered furniture
• Use window curtains and shades made of plastic to avoid dust
• Control the humidity of the house as allergens like to reside in moist and humid areas
• Use air filters wherever possible
• Put away used clothes in the wash area and extra clothes in the closet
• Remove stuffed toys and animals from under the bed
